Be A Volunteer

Did you know that Retro Radio is providing volunteering opportunities to local people in South Wales?

All volunteers who join Retro Radio receive quality training, from professional, experienced personnel in journalism, presenting, production, or whatever area of radio broadcasting interests them.

This training will prepare volunteers who wish to move onto paid employment at radio stations and media outlets.

All roles at Retro Radio are on a flexible basis, but do require commitment from volunteers to complete tasks, shows and news at set times.

Role Title:                          News presenter

Estimated Hours:            4 – 6 hours per week

Location:                          Based at the Retro Radio at 268 Corporation Road, Newport, Gwent, South Wales. 

Reporting to:                   Operations Manager.

Main Purpose of role: 

Volunteer presenters are provided the training to research, develop and record locally relevant news items to be broadcast on air at the station.

News is a vital part of Retro Radio output, with the station being the number one source for local news within the county of Gwent, South Wales, News reporters will be expected to source reliable news stories without help, although all previous training will be provided.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

To source and develop locally relevant news articles both in text and audio form.

To attend events within the local area and source interviews for news stories.

To attend training sessions to develop individuals and overall station ability.

To provide support to the station co-ordinator with training of future volunteers.

Role Title:                          Researcher/Producer

Estimated Hours:            1 – 6 per week

Location:                          Based at the Retro Radio at 268 Corporation Road, Newport, Gwent, South Wales. 

Reporting to:                   Operations Manager

Main Purpose of role:   

This role will see you work alongside our on air presenters, supporting them in sourcing locally relevant content and guests for our shows.

Tasks includes storing and finding information, answering and making phone calls, greeting visitors, creating and managing written communications, interview preparation and other day to day tasks.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

To support staff and volunteers in creating engaging, locally relevant content.

To organise interviews and meetings with potential guests.

To attend training sessions to develop individuals and overall station ability.

To provide support to the station co-ordinator with training of future volunteers.

Role Title:                          Events Team

Estimated Hours:             1 – 6 per week (During summer + Christmas period)

Location:                            Based at the Retro Radio at 268 Corporation Road, Newport, Gwent, South Wales. 

Reporting to:                    Operations Manager

Main Purpose of role:   

Our events team are the face of Retro Radio at events across the South Wales. They are necessary in the promotion of the station, making sure it is seen out and about in the community.

Tasks includes event attendance, station promotion, mascot support and business marketing activities.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

To promote the station and its activities in a professional manner.

To have a positive attitude to all members of the public.

To attend training sessions to develop individuals and overall station ability.

To provide support to the station co-ordinator with training of future volunteers.
